The Burning Urge to Dance

Many people have a burning desire to dance. May be for personal enrichment or fitness, or as a hobby, either way you look at it, dancing is a great form of self-expression. When looking for a place to take dance lessons, we suggest you consider what kind of dance styles are of interest to you, the purpose of learning those dance styles and the costs that may be associated. Perhaps the first point to consider is: what kind of dance style would best suit you? Obviously, someone who dislikes couples dancing probably shouldn’t take ballroom dancing lessons, and a person who dislikes country music shouldn’t get into line dancing. Particular attention should also be given to your fitness level and your age. Some dance styles, such as salsa, ballroom and pole dancing can be quite physically demanding, while others are more easily adapted to an individual’s fitness level. Another point for you to think over is how will you be able to use your new found dancing skills outside of classes? The second consideration is purpose. Why do you want to dance? Is it because you’re getting married and would like to learn the waltz so you don’t look like a shmuck in front of the guests on your big night?

Ballroom Dancing, Pole Dancing, Salsa, Ballet Dancing, Hip Hop Dancing and Rock & Roll

Do you want to pole dance at your favorite studio or at home? Is there a long-unrealised passion to get into ballroom dancing as a serious hobby? Or, are you just wanting to do something positive, healthy and social to enrich your life? All of these are very valid reasons for wanting to learn any of the many dance styles available and should be given consideration when looking for dance lessons. You should also think about how proficient you may wish to become in your chosen area of dance, and should think about looking for classes and instructors that cater to your level and the level you aspire to. For personal enjoyment, someone looking at dancing as a serious hobby should probably choose to opt for lessons at a professional studio or learn with qualified teachers/instructors. Some people may even find that a video or DVD gives them enough basic instruction in their chosen dance style but keep in mind, DVD’s can never quite replicate a physical teacher/student lesson. After all, while recorded instruction is a handy reference to have, technology at this point in time doesn’t allow a disc or a tape to let the user know when their stance or moves require correction. Unless of course that DVD has eyes, hands and a voice. Cost is a third factor. Many dance styles offer dance lessons for a minimal fee, while intricate ballroom dancing lessons will naturally cost you more. Anyone who knows the steps can teach line dancing, for instance but a dancer will generally pay more for the expert tutelage required in more formal or exotic dancing styles. Some clubs or studios offer a discount for couples, while others may not. You need to consider whether you will need a partner to take the dance lessons, if one will be provided and any other clothing or equipment that may be necessary. One last point to be considered. Is what you’d expect to get from the dance lessons worth the package price? Like a gym, you may well be stuck paying the entire price, even if you stop taking the dance lessons. One option may be a per-class fee, so an individual can stop when they feel it is appropriate. Unless you are confident in your own staying powers. Dance classes also provide great opportunities to get to know other dancers in the area, as well as practice and tips from experienced dancers. Dancing, regardless of the style or type, is an enjoyable recreation and nearly everyone can participate in some form of it.
