Rock n Roll

Rock'n'Roll dancing. The spirit continues.

Its mother may have been the blues, but its father gave it rhythm. Its aunt might be country and western but its uncle gave it an electric guitar. Blue Grass may have taught it to pick, but its riffs come from the soul. By the time its children added high school rock, pop and surf music and technology gave it stereo, multi-track machines, mixing consoles and now, digitization.

Elvis Presley was one of the first big stars of rock and roll. Until July 3, 1954, Elvis was just a shy truck driver with a nice smile. That day, Elvis went to a recording studio because he wanted to make a record to give his mother for her birthday. A record producer heard him and soon Elvis was the "King" of rock and roll.

Chubby Checker revolutionized dancing in the early 1960s with a dance called "The Twist." It was the first dance for which one didn’t really need a partner. Checker introduced the twist on a record called "Let’s Twist Again." Other non-partner dances soon followed, with names like the "madison," the "frug," the "jerk," and the "mashed potato."
